Do you think it'd be good for the industry if other game store fronts like Origin were legit competitors to Steam?
On more than one occasion i've wondered if the games industry as a whole would be healthier if Steam was less dominant as a PC online storefront. It has pretty much full control over what it's playerbase plays, and if it ever went to shit my entire library on Steam is 90% of the games i own. That said, Steam has been good to me over the years (especially when it came to 75% off sales), and i don't see a reason to switch to something like Origin. I get the base idea that more competition is generally good for a consumer, but i've gotten really attached to Steam and would be sad to see it decline in popularity.
On a similar note, how can other competitors break in? Steam is such a monolith, especially with the consistent sales system they have and the new storefront, i have trouble imaging a reason why people would leave Steam. I have a few ideas, none of which are deal breakers alone but would be a nice start.
1) Steam doesn't let you follow a game series/ dev; only let's you follow games one at a time. Maybe competitors to Steam would let players mark their favorite studios and get constant updates about what their favorite developers are working on.
2) The forums on Steam are pretty basic, and can be hard to sort through if you have a topic you're interested in.
3) The leaderboards for things like speedrunning are hidden behind the achievements tab, i'd rather leaderboards be separate.
4) I personally feel that the Steam library should have a manual sorting option, or other tools to help you sort your library to be more organized than just A-Z
