This is the great story from my game dev class!
On Tuesday, we were told that we weren't going to work on our horrible tutorial projects because we had a guest speaker from the game industry.
Turns out, the speaker was Michael Kelbaugh, the CEO of Retro Studios!
It sounds farfetched, but I live in Leander TX, close to where Retro is located, and my teacher's husband actually works at Retro himself.
He talked to us about a lot of different things, just using the questions we asked him lead the conversation. Some were about his history in the industry, some were about the game development cycle, somebody asked what his favorite pokemon is (Squirtle), etc.
In my opinion, the coolest part was when he walked through our gaming generation posters, pointing out games we added due to their importance that he worked on. When he got to 6th generation, he literally pointed at Miyamoto and Iwata's printed faces and said, "Miyamoto-san is a good friend of mine, and Iwata-san was a great mentor to me." at which point I was freaking out inside.
Something he talked about that stood out to me was the moment they presented a vertical slice of Donkey Kong Country Returns to Miyamoto to hopefully get it approved. When Miyamoto was playing it, he stopped in the middle of a flat area and just ran back and forth for five straight minutes, because apparently his primary concern was that they properly animated DK. Afterwards, he said that the current animation of DK stopping looked kind of like he was leaning over and blowing. He suggested that they should make that into a mechanic and left the room. So, that's how Retro got the green light on DKCR :P
At the end of the class he passed out mints in nintendo themed containers. Mine is an NES controller that I haven't opened, but that's really just because I just don't like mints. :P
The person sitting to the right of me was a total Metroid Prime fanboy, though, so he actually was given a retro studios hat (which usually you only get as an employee)
So, even if the class ends up not leading anywhere in terms of content, at least I have that story!
...and, of course, only two degrees of separation from the Reggie! Kappa.
I feel like I've been saying Kappa too much here Kappa
