In the course of my fitful starts on a number of projects, I have come across a lot of resources that others have made and offered for free use to people. I have even dipped my hand into making a couple of them myself. All of these are probably common public knowledge already, but if they aren't, they ought to be, so I am going to share them here anyway just in case they have been missed by someone who has a use for them. Also, within the next day or so, I am going to be uploading a lot of the graphics that I have made for Star Storm to OpenGameArt.org (one of the sites listed below), so that others can make use of them, as well as some other things that I have dabbled in (mostly spell effects). When that is done, I will post a reply here with the link. Anyhow, the three main resources that I wanted to share are as follows...
OpenGameArt.org: This is one of the best places to go for free graphics, sound, and music on the internet. Aside from hosting a ton of content from a lot of creative people, it also links out to other sites where you can find even more free resources. It's also a great place to look if you are searching for someone to hop on board a game project, or are offering commissions.
SoundImage.org: This is the site where the composer Eric Matyas hosts all of his music. It's free to use for both non-commercial and commercial projects, and the quality of his work is pretty sweet. The website has several categories to pick from, as well as some really useful categorizations like the "Looping" category, which contains all the work he's done that can be looped well out-of-the-box (highly useful for video game development).
Bfxr.net: This is an online sound generator and mixer, freely available for use. You have all rights to any sounds you make using it. It's a tool that someone with a good understanding of technical sound could get the best use out of, but anyone can make simple, decent-quality sounds on it if they play around with it enough. Also available as a stand-alone executable, so you don't have to rely on the website if you don't want to.
That's my list! Anyone else have anything to add to the list? Post it below!
